Unlike the aggressive marketing push in , the latest notification will be temporary and users can easily dismiss it. As we pointed out last year, customers can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Or you can also purchase a new desktop, laptop or 2-in-1 device from Microsoft and its partners. Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 11 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.
As of January 14, , PCs running Windows 7 no longer receive security updates. Therefore, it's important that you upgrade to a modern operating system such as Windows 11, which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. In addition, Microsoft customer service is no longer available to provide Windows 7 technical support. Related services for Windows 7 are also being discontinued over time.
For most Windows 7 users, moving to a new device with Windows 11 is the recommended path forward. Today's PCs are faster, lightweight yet powerful, and more secure, with an average price that's considerably less than that of the average PC eight years ago.
Though we strongly recommend getting a new PC with Windows 11, we realize that is not always feasible, so we also suggest exploring an upgrade to Windows To take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities, we recommend moving to a new PC with Windows 11, which brings a fresh look and new ways to stay creative and productive. Most Windows 7 devices will not meet the hardware requirements for upgrading to Windows 11, but as an alternative, compatible Windows 7 PCs can be upgraded to Windows 10 by purchasing and installing a full version of the software.
Before investing in a Windows 10 upgrade, please consider that Windows 10 will reach its end of support date on October 14, The Windows 10 free upgrade offer ended on July 29, Anyway, the free upgrade offer was extended briefly, at least for people who use assistive technologies.
The FAQ on a separate page even called it a "free upgrade offer extension" and pointedly noted that it was not limited to specific assistive technologies. I regularly use the Magnifier utility in Windows, which is indisputably an assistive technology.
Of course, I'm not a lawyer, and this column isn't legal advice. But I will say that I am personally confident in the activation status of any PC upgraded using the tool on that page during the eligibility period.
This extension was, I think, a very large nod and a wink, designed to make it easy for those who wanted a Windows 10 upgrade to still get it while placating the OEM partners who were none too happy about the year-long emphasis on upgrades rather than new PC sales.
Alas, I say "was," because the extension which was itself extended officially ended on Jan. The page that formerly ran an Upgrade Assistant now returns an error message. The big question now is whether Microsoft will ever turn off the code on its activation servers that dispenses digital licenses after an upgrade from an earlier Windows version. I've continued to test that scenario, and I can confirm, long after the end of support for Windows 7, that it still works.

Windows 7 will enter its End of Life on Tuesday, January 14, After that date, Microsoft will no longer offer patches and security updates for Windows 7. That means that any bugs or problems still found in Windows 7 will never get fixed.
